Synopsis

RELIGULOUS follows political humorist and author Bill Maher (“Real Time With Bill Maher,” “Politically Incorrect”) as he travels around the globe interviewing people about God and religion. Known for his astute analytical skills, irreverent wit and commitment to never pulling a punch, Maher brings his characteristic honesty to an unusual spiritual journey. Directed by Larry Charles (BORAT: CULTURAL LEARNINGS OF AMERICA FOR MAKE BENEFIT GLORIOUS NATION OF KAZAKHSTAN, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”), RELIGULOUS will mark Charles’ first feature project since the critically acclaimed, wildly successful BORAT. Jonah Smith and Palmer West of Thousand Words (A SCANNER DARKLY, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) and Bill Maher are producing.

Maher chats about the topic of religion on his show, and that this one topic needed to be painted on a bigger canvas. This is what inspired him to make a feature length movie on religion, which has never been done before. Charles and Maher also talk about the challenges, controversy, and their most suprising findings during their travels. "Religulous" is in theaters. 

    "...I think the most-surprising thing, we agree, is we found that religious people don't know very much about religion. They don't know their own religions. They -- almost none of them have read the Bible. I mean, they can quote it. They can quote a few passages, but they have no clue what's in there. If they did, if they really knew what a genocidal killing machine God was, ya know, maybe they would have second thoughts about revering a character like that..."

Having a conterversial reputation, Maher has no problem suggesting religious explotation, a very touchy and unsettling topic. Maher also talks about his own religious evolution and his most shocking encounters. 

    "...there certainly were surprises. I don't know if we were asking so much what people believe so much as why they believe. The central question of the film is, "How can otherwise rational people believe in a talking snake?" as there is in the Garden of Eden..."
